Aromas of cacao and blueberry open to a medium-bodied palate with dark fruit, a savory earthiness, and a firm but approachable tannic grip. The finish is dry and persistent with a lingering mineral depth that rewards the glass.
Fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and no additions at any stage of fermentation or aging. Sulfur is not added during fermentation or aging, with little to no SO2 added at bottling.
The fruit is sourced from Lone Pine Vineyard in the Sierra Foothills, one of the few sites in California where Lagrein is grown. The variety is native to the Alto Adige region of northeastern Italy, and its presence in the Sierra Foothills reflects the region's long history of experimentation with alpine and northern Italian varieties suited to its elevation and continental climate.
