Aromas of fresh cranberry, wild raspberry, orange zest, and dried prairie herbs lead into a light-bodied, energetic palate. Flavors of tart red plum, pomegranate, and cracked peppercorn mesh with a subtle, loamy earthiness. The texture is translucent, soft, and fluid, supported by very gentle, low-key tannins and crisp, mouthwatering natural acidity through a clean, refreshing, chillable finish.
A playful, low-intervention co-ferment of early-harvest Zinfandel and Carignan. The fruit is hand-harvested and foot-stomped to kick off spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. After just four days of gentle punch-downs for light extraction, the wine is pressed off its skins into neutral oak barrels to finish fermentation and rest without heavy oak influence before bottling.
Grapes are sourced from the dry-farmed, historic Castañon Vineyard in Redwood Valley, located within Mendocino County. Planted in red, iron-rich gravelly loam soils at high elevation, the site experiences hot summer days balanced by sharp diurnal drops in night temperature. Picking early in this climate captures high natural acidity and moderate alcohol while preserving delicate fruit aromatics.
