Grapes
100% Chardonnay. The grapes come from own-rooted old vines, originally planted in 1971. Tyler uses the low-yielding Mt. Eden Selection clone, favoring a mineral and focused expression of Chardonnay.
Farming
Sourced from the iconic Sanford & Benedict Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. The old vines sit on a gently north-leaning knoll composed of shallow, light, and rocky Elder Chert and shale over clay soils. The site's close proximity to the Pacific Ocean provides crucial cool air, fog, and marine influence.
Winemaking
Grapes are whole-cluster pressed to tank, followed by native yeast fermentation. The wine is racked to French oak barrels and puncheons with no more than 15% new oak. It undergoes full malolactic conversion and is aged sur lies for 10 months with no batonage, preserving freshness and purity.
Tasting Notes
A complex, layered, and nuanced expression of the site. It offers a beautiful nose of clementines, petrichor, and white flowers. The palate is precise and lively, balancing crystalline purity and a pillowy texture, with flavors of lemon custard, briny oyster shell, and a fine-grained chalky finish.
