Aromas of concentrated blackberry, dark plum, and blue floral notes integrate with savory notes of sandalwood, graphite, and a hint of espresso bean. The palate is full-bodied and profoundly structured, featuring a core of lush black fruit and a seamless, velvet-like tannin profile. It displays a surprising mineral energy and a balanced acidity that leads to a long finish marked by dark chocolate and a persistent, spicy complexity.
The winemaking team utilizes 100% Merlot fruit that is harvested by hand and undergoes a rigorous double-selection process on sorting tables. The grapes are fermented in open-top oak vats using native yeasts, with a maceration period lasting roughly 25 to 30 days to maximize extraction and depth. The wine matures for 18 to 20 months in 100% new French oak barriques, followed by several months of refinement in the bottle before release, a process that yields one of Italy’s most iconic and powerful expressions of the variety.
The fruit is grown in the Colline Metallifere area of the Alta Maremma in Tuscany, Italy. The site is defined by its unique soil composition, which is rich in clay and various mineral elements like zinc and iron that give the earth a reddish tint. These metalliferous soils, combined with a sunny Mediterranean climate moderated by sea breezes, allow Merlot to reach a level of phenolic ripeness and power that is distinct from its French counterparts, resulting in a wine with immense scale and longevity.
