Aromas of juicy mulberry, plum, and red earth integrate with savory notes of dried herbs, graphite, and a hint of vanilla bean. The palate is medium-bodied and exceptionally vibrant, featuring a core of bright red berries and a "moreish," crunchy texture. It displays a balanced structure with silky tannins and a refreshing acidity that leads to a clean, energetic finish marked by a dusting of aromatic herbs.
A co-fermented field blend of seven Italian varieties: Lagrein (28%), Nero d’Avola (25%), Sagrantino (20%), Sangiovese (11%), Nebbiolo (9%), Schioppettino (6%), and Lambrusco Maestri (1%). In the cellar, the fruit is de-stemmed and fermented with natural yeasts in open-top vessels. The wine undergoes natural malolactic fermentation and matures on its fine lees for 10 months in stainless steel tanks. This approach emphasizes primary fruit purity and a bright, approachable style without the influence of new oak.
The fruit is grown on the Chalmers family estate in the Heathcote region of Victoria, Australia. The site is defined by its east-facing slopes on the Mount Camel Range and its iconic, ancient red Cambrian earth soils. At an elevation of 500 to 740 feet, the vineyard provides a warm environment ideally suited to these sun-loving Mediterranean varieties. The 2022 vintage was characterized by a cooler-than-average summer, allowing for slow ripening and excellent flavor concentration while maintaining the racy acidity that defines this alpine-inspired red.
