Aromas of violet, red and black cherry, and dried herbs open to a structured, full-bodied palate with ripe blackberry, blood orange, and star anise. The tannins are dense and fine-grained, woven through with a bright, food-driven acidity and a long finish marked by balsamic and spice.
Grapes are harvested by hand between late September and mid-October, then destemmed and fermented in truncated cone-shaped vats with approximately two weeks of skin maceration. The wine is matured in a combination of medium-sized oak barrels and barriques before bottling. Gran Selezione is the top tier of the Chianti Classico classification, requiring single-vineyard fruit and extended aging before release.
The Campolungo vineyard is a 9.5-hectare single cru sitting at 420 to 580 meters above sea level on terraced hillsides in Greve in Chianti. The altitude and exposure give the site a cooler microclimate than much of the appellation, preserving acidity and aromatic intensity in the fruit. The vineyard has been part of the Lamole di Lamole estate since the winery's founding and is considered its most historic and distinctive parcel.
