Aromas of black cherry, wild mountain plum, and crushed violets integrate with sophisticated notes of sage, graphite, and dark chocolate. The palate is full-bodied and exceptionally seamless, featuring a dense core of dark fruit and a savory, mineral-driven energy. It is defined by its architectural structure, with very fine, iron-like tannins and a vibrant acidity that leads to an expansive finish marked by hints of cedar and black olive.
Winemaker Tim Mondavi and his team utilize a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Merlot. In the cellar, the fruit is sorted with extreme precision and fermented in a combination of concrete tanks and French oak vats using native yeasts. The wine matures for 20 months in French oak barrels, approximately 65% of which are new, and a small portion in single-use concrete eggs. This diverse aging regimen ensures the wine maintains its primary fruit purity while developing the complex, earthy secondary characteristics associated with the estate.
The fruit is grown exclusively on the Sage Mountain Vineyard located high atop Pritchard Hill in the eastern hills of Napa Valley. The site is defined by its rocky, volcanic soils and high elevation, which ranges from 1,300 to 1,600 feet. This location sits above the fog line, allowing the vines to receive consistent sunlight while staying cool due to the elevation. The combination of red, iron-rich soils and the extreme hillside terrain results in low yields of highly concentrated grapes that possess a unique mineral tension and structural power.
