Aromas of crème de cassis, black plum, and shaved lead pencil integrate with luxurious notes of violet, espresso, and dark chocolate. The palate is full-bodied and monumental, featuring a dense core of black fruit and a seamless, velvet texture. It is supported by massive but incredibly polished tannins and a lift of mountain-air freshness, leading to a sprawling finish that persists for over a minute with hints of iron and spice.
The winemaking team, led by Jeff Ames, utilizes precision harvesting to select only the most pristine clusters from this legendary site. In the cellar, the grapes undergo a cold soak for several days followed by fermentation in small stainless steel tanks and French oak puncheons. The wine matures for 22 months in 100% new French oak barrels from elite cooperages. This high percentage of new wood is necessary to balance the sheer power and fruit concentration inherent to To Kalon fruit, providing a refined structural framework for long-term aging.
The fruit is grown in the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, located on the western bench of the Rutherford AVA in Napa Valley. This specific site is defined by its well-drained, gravelly loam soils and its position at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains. The vineyard benefits from ideal sun exposure and the famous "Rutherford Dust" soil profile, which imparts a unique, cocoa-like tannin structure and a deep mineral resonance to the Cabernet Sauvignon grown here.
