2018 Via Revolucionaria ‘Hulk’ Semillon
Wine Enthusiast 90 ~ A bright gold color and waxy aromas of apricot and citrus peel form the nose of this Sémillon from Matías Michelini that spent three months in concrete eggs. It shows plumpness on the palate, with flavors of yellow apple and peach backed by a mild bitterness.
2016 Rudd Mt. Veeder Sauvignon Blanc$90.00WA 94Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 94 ~ Composed of 83% Sauvignon Blanc, 10% Sauvignon Gris and 7% Sémillon fermented 17% in new oak, 48% in neutral oak and 35% in concrete, the 2016 Sauvignon Blanc Mt. Veeder has quite an earthy/mineral nose to begin, featuring notes of wet pebbles, chalk dust and damp moss over a core of ripe peaches, lemon curd and dried herbs. The medium to full-bodied palate has great vivacity and depth, sporting a beautifully chewy phenolic texture and rasping backbone of acidity to support the intense citrus and herbal flavors, finishing on a lingering chalky note. Still very youthful, forget it for a year or two and drink it over the next 10-12 years+.
2016 Quinta de Chocapalha Arinto Branco$11.00WA 91Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 91 ~ The 2016 Arinto, sourced from 30-year-old vines, is the latest in a brand that is one of my favorite overachievers from Chocapalha. It comes in at 12.5 percent alcohol. This is another fine one. It has excellent acidity but a bit more depth than the 2015, if not quite its laser burst of acidity. All unoaked, it is pure and fresh, with the ability to age. (Tasting the 2008 next to it proved that, by the way.) The acidity of this grape is always a preservative and it ages well in many regions. If you like them lighter in style and crispy, this is a great warm-weather choice at a bargain price.
2019 Claude Riffault Sancerre ‘Les Boucauds’$40.00DC 95Decanter 95 ~ Part of Loire Sauvignon Blanc: Panel tasting results Les Boucauds is one of 14 communes within the Sancerre appellation and is rich with Kimmeridgian limestone-clay soil. The Domaine owns a total of 13.5 hectares of vineyards across Sancerre. The certified organic Les Boucauds vineyards are located on hillsides with a vine age of 30-40 years and they began the transition to biodynamic farming in 2018. After hand harvesting, 80% of the juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks to retain the fresh fruit characteristics and 20% is fermented in barrel; each parcel is then aged separately for 7-8 months before being blended and bottled in early summer. JB: Light gold, touch of honey, gooseberry and pineapple notes, vibrant and long finish. RG: Scents of pure apple fruit, florals. Good transparency of place yet with richness and depth of lees coming from winemaking. Lovely phenolic texture. CK: Light peach and citrus notes. The palate has real harmony, with elegantly creamed white peach and citrus fruits, cut with minerally energy and fresh acidity, giving it a real sense of panache and style.
