It’s full bodied and rich but briskly balanced too, with a palate streaked with char, vanilla and spice. A gorgeously brooding expression of Côte-Rôtie, it finishes on fine, firm tannins. Beautiful already the wine will reveal greater perfume and complexity through 2035 and hold further still.

It's an elegant version of this cuvée, offering beautiful blueberry, raspberry, crushed violet, graphite, and crushed rock-like minerality. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and balanced, it’s polished and seamless, yet has plenty of tannins as well as richness, and is going to evolve beautifully.

  • 2017 Domaine Johann Michel Cornas

    $53.00
    JD 93WE 92VN 92
Jeb Dunnick 93: The 2017 Cornas comes from more sandy soils and was brought up in 3- to 5-year-old demi-muids. It's an elegant, complex Cornas with lots of ripe red and black fruits and plenty of loamy earth, truffle, and spice incense aromas. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, balanced, incredibly classy, elegant Cornas that has terrific tannins, loads of upfront charm, and a great finish.
Wine Enthusiast 92: Whiffs of horse saddle, smoke and anise lend complexity to rich but restrained black plum and cherry on the nose of this wine. The palate is surprisingly riper, ruddy and voluptuous in texture, but balanced by firm, penetrating tannins. Moderately full bodied and solidly framed, it should drink well through 2030.
Vinous 92: Deep lurid ruby. Smoke-accented blackberry, cherry compote and violet qualities, along with a spicy nuance that builds in the glass. Shows very good depth as well as energy in the mouth, offering sweet blueberry, cherry and candied violet flavors that spread out slowly on the back half. Closes smooth and long, with repeating spice and floral qualities and gentle tannic grip. Made from de-stemmed fruit.

  • 2018 Prieuré de Montézargues Rose

    $23.00
    WS 90
Tasting Notes Tavel is the only all-Rose appellation in the Rhone of France. Said to be the only Rose that can actually age (and improve with age). It has been a favorite among royalty since the 18th century - said to be Lous XIV favorite style of wine. Tavel Rose is always dry with fleshy, round body structures (much like a light red wine) and blanched by acidity. Chateau La Nerthe is comprised of mostly of Grenache and Grenache Blanc as well as Syrah, Clairette, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Bourboulenc all hand harvested from the Estate vineyards that are certified organic. This vivid pink Tavel is extremely aromatic. The nose is complex with blood oranges and graphites notes enhanced with raspberry and peach character. The palate is juicy, with a chalky-mineral acidity and a bright and energetic finish.

  • 2016 Maison Brotte ‘Secret Barville’ Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    $62.00
    WS 93WE 95
Wine Spectator 93: Lush and rustic, offering raspberry, plum and cherry preserve flavors that cruise through slowly, with light sandalwood, garrigue and brick dust accents filling in on the finish. Reveals a pleasant tug of earth. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2022 through 2035.
Wine Enthusiast 95: Firm, sandpapery tannins frame this rich, undulating blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Studded with glossy blueberry and preserved black-cherry flavors, it's an intense, brooding wine shaded by hints of crushed earth and coffee grinds. It drinks beautifully already, but should mature elegantly through 2035.

Wine Enthusiast 91: Potent blackberry and mulberry flavors are shaded by sandstone and chalk in this remarkably elegant wine. It's a plush, richly concentrated wine, but has a savory, earthen tone that lends freshness and balance. Ripe, supple tannins linger on the finish, accentuating its silky demeanor. Enjoy now–2022.

  • 2018 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

    $115.00
    JD 92
Jeb Dunnick 92: Starting with the 2018s and aged all in stainless steel and bottled in February, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Blanc shows the more medium-bodied, forward, supple style that’s common in the whites in the vintage. Light spice, pear, quince, licorice, and crushed citrus notes all give way to a medium-bodied, silky, elegant white that’s drinking beautifully already. I don’t expect it to be the longest-lived white by Avril’s standards, but it should easily evolve nicely for 5-7 years.

Jeb Dunnick 98: This beauty has everything you could ask for. The blend is heavily shifted toward Mourvèdre, and it offers a mammoth bouquet of black cherries, graphite, cured meats, Asian spices, and assorted garrigue-like nuances. Deep, full-bodied, and concentrated, it stays straight and focused on the palate, with a stacked mid-palate, ripe, silky tannins, and fabulous length. You’re going to want bottles of this in the cellar, and comparing the 2007, 2010, 2016, and 2017 over the coming two decades is going to be a treat.
