2016 Paolo Scavino ‘Bric dël Fiasc’ Barolo

    WS 96WA 98JS 95WE 93VN 96
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 98: Drawing its fruit from Castiglione Falletto, the Paolo Scavino 2016 Barolo Bric dël Fiasc shows dimension, depth, precision and power. The wine opens to a dark garnet color with a saturated hue, leading to a full, all-encompassing bouquet. The Barolo Bric dël Fiasc is often the most representative wine in the Scavino portfolio, and never has this been more true than in this classic vintage. Dark fruit, licorice, spice and ferrous earth build a fluid and multifaceted bouquet. The mouthfeel sits firm and tight on the palate today, promising to evolve and soften tomorrow. This is a bottle for your cellar.

  • 2019 Cieck Erbaluce di Caluso

Tasting Notes This wine is simply called Erbaluce as it represents the most straightforward expression of the Cieck’s Erbaluce grapes. Comprised of 100 percent Erbaluce that has been whole cluster pressed, cold fermented to help retain the grapes aromatic and flavor compounds, and left in stainless steel tanks tanks for a few months before bottling. Lively and fresh - fruit forward sensations are well integrated with the firm structure of the wine and refreshing acidity. Best salad and seafood wine ever!

  • 2013 Castello di Neive ‘Santo Stefano’ Barbaresco Riserva

    VN 94
Vinous 94: The 2013 Barbaresco Riserva Albesani Santo Stefano is a bit richer and bigger than the non-Riserva bottling, but it is not markedly different. Gorgeous Nebbiolo scents of wild cherry, dried herbs, menthol licorice and crushed flowers develop in a subtle, expressive Barbaresco that hits all the right notes. The 2013 finishes with wonderful density and resonance, all while retaining its gracious, mid-weight personality. What a pretty wine it is.

2016 E. Pira & Figli Chiara Boschis ‘Cannubi’ Barolo

    WA 98JS 98VN 98
James Suckling 98: Subtle aromas of flowers and strawberries with hints of cranberries. It really rises from the glass and fills the room. Full-bodied, yet so refined and beautiful with ultra refined tannins and ever so polished tannins that make the wine stealthy and focused. Great length. A fantastic encore to the 99-point 2015. From organically grown grapes.

2016 E. Pira & Figli Chiara Boschis ‘Mosconi’ Barolo

    WA 96VN 96
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 96: The E Pira-Chiara Boschis 2016 Barolo Mosconi is a little wider and richer compared to the Cannubi, with bigger fruit, more sweetness, spice, grilled oregano and a touch of crushed hazelnut. Despite the wide net of aromas offered on the bouquet, this wine shows a very sharp and focused approach with elegantly linear tannins and matching acidity. There is a lifted quality to both the nose and the mouthfeel that gives this wine beautiful momentum and length. Mosconi is one of the headline vineyards of Monforte d'Alba. This is a gorgeous set of new releases from one of the nicest and most determined women in Barolo, Chiara Boschis. I may have missed it last year, but I am happy to see that her name is now featured prominently on the front label. Like the woman who created them, these wines are full of energy, elegance and voice.

  • 2018 G.D. Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo

    VN 90
Vinous 90: The 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo emerges from a parcel in Sinio. Dark fruit, spice, earthy notes and a good bit of tannin give the Vajra's Langhe Nebbiolo a decidedly brooding, powerful feel and quite a bit more seriousness than is typical at this level. Sweet red berry fruit, mint and spice add freshness alongside bright acidity as the 2018 opens up in the glass. This is such a pretty and expressive wine.

  • 2019 Enrico Serafino ‘Grifo del Quartaro’ Gavi di Gavi

    WA 91
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 91: The 2019 Gavi del Comune di Gavi Grifo del Quartaro is a beautifully fragrant wine that shows the floral and tropical fruit intensity that comes with the Cortese grape. The vines are planted in a six-hectare site in Monterotondo di Gavi that boasts white calcareous clay soils. These conditions reduce the vigor of the vines, resulting in more character and concentration. You'll also notice a drying touch of chalky minerality that gives linearity and focus to the wine. An ample 50,000 bottles were released at a terrific value price.

  • 2013 Paolo Scavino ‘Rocche dell’Annunziata Riserva’ Barolo

    WA 97JS 95WE 94
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 97: The 2013 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata Riserva was released in January of 2019, and once again it looks to be a top prize. Licorice and flowers dominate the bouquet, and its beautiful red fruit is generous throughout. This wine has always been a beauty and consistently has had a high price tag to reflect that quality, going back to the first vintages of the 1990s. It has regularly sold for about $200 every year for the last decade. These vines are old, some of them very old (reaching the ripe age of 60 years old in 1990s, when many of them were replanted with carefully selected clones), producing an elegance and concentration that brings intensity and a high standard of aromas. This Barolo without a doubt shows its pedigree and a quality of noble perfumes that demonstrate characteristics of the greatest Nebbiolo vintages, all delivered with excellent concentration. The magic lingers on the palate, right up to the finish.
James Suckling 95: Aromas of white truffles and dried red cherries here with an earthy nuance that makes for a complex and compelling nose. The palate has a deep and dense shape and delivers a wide array of rich cherry and plum flavors. Some handy spice here, too. Drink or hold.
Wine Enthusiast 94: Violet, iris, exotic spice and menthol aromas lead the way on this fragrant red. The firmly structured palate boasts elegance and tension, delivering cranberry, pomegranate, licorice and white pepper set against tightly knit, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. It’s still youthfully austere and will be even better after several more years of aging. Drink 2023–2033.

  • 2018 Vietti Barbera d’Asti ‘Tre Vigne’

    WA 91
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 91: The Vietti 2018 Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne is a vibrant red wine teeming with energy and electricity. Those berry tones of cassis, cranberry and black currant pop from the glass. Primary fruit remains the focus, but that fruit is nicely framed by contours of spice and toasted nut. The grapes harvested for this wine represent a second selection from some of the same parcels that make the Barbera d'Asti La Crena. This cool-vintage expression is just lovely, informal and fun.
Tasting Notes The wine is a vibrant red, berry tones of cassis, cranberry and black currant pop from the glass. The fruit is nicely framed by the contours of spice and toasted nut.
