This Tuesdays’ Wine Tasting is not just about wine! Of course, we will still be enjoying 5 delicious wines but in addition, we will also be shifting the focus to those that are in need and don’t necessarily have a voice to advocate for themselves. In 1964, noticing how overwhelmed the animal shelters were, the community responded and through fundraisers, bake sales and car washes, they began what has now become Georgia’s oldest no-kill shelter. For the past 50 years PAWS Atlanta, formerly the DeKalb Humane Society, has found forever homes for over 46,000 animals, both dogs and cats.
This Tuesday, a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales and wine sales will be donated to both PAWS Atlanta and the Humane Society of the United States. This is a cause that is personally very near and dear. I once lived with a friend who ran a small-scale animal rescue on 6 acres just outside of downtown Decatur. Living with and helping to take care of anywhere from 20 to 30 dogs at a time was both incredible and heartbreaking. Some of dogs rescued came from abuse and severe neglect, only to have their lives completely changed by finding a real home that they know is safe. It might be the most amazing sight in the world to watch a dog who has been chained up their entire life finally run, swim and play for the very first time ever. PAWS Atlanta does this every day by giving animals a second chance while offering them shelter and love in an environment where they can feel safe until they find their family
The Great Oregon Wine Company is dedicated to helping dogs through the sale of their wines and winemaking services. One of their lines of wines is made entirely as a dedication to their former vineyard dog, Rascal, and goes by the same name. The label itself is a beautiful memorial to their furry friend, completed by his silhouette topped with a halo. Proceeds from this wine go to the Humane Society of America through a yearly donation. They firmly believe in giving back to these companions that bring so much joy and mischief to our lives.
The collection of Rascal wines consists of a pinot noir, a pinot gris and a rosé. All of the grapes are sourced from the Willamette Valley and the pinot gris is farmed using sustainable practices. This Tuesday we will not only be tasting 2 wines from the Rascal collection but we will also be tasting 3 wines under the Duck Pond label: a pinot noir, a chardonnay and a pinot gris. Recently added to The Great Oregon Wine Company’s portfolio, these wines are from premier vineyards throughout Oregon. Founded in 1993 by Doug and Jo Anne Fries, Duck Pond Cellars is located in Dundee, Oregon. It has always been a family operation, with Doug and Jo Ann continuing to oversee the vineyards, which they now have a second called Dessert Wind in Washington State. Their son and daughter are president and vice-president, respectively, of the company with other family members rounding out the team.
Please come and join us on Tuesday and drink some fantastic wines from The Great Oregon Wine Company’s portfolio while giving back to the furry friends that make each day brighter!
